for daughters / 9-12

Hi daughters! Eliza here! This is a page full of ideas, books, links and videos. Everything on this page was really important for me when I was your age or has come out more recently and I think you'll fall in love with it just as I have. I want you to know about all of it!

Alanna, The Song of the Lioness by Tamora Pierce: this is a fantasy book about a girl who has to disguise herself as a boy in order to fulfill her dream of becoming a knight! Beyond being a super kick-ass book about a strong, sassy girl, the book also talks about real stuff like friendships, first crushes, first periods and what it means to be a woman. Big ideas. Awesome book. And, if you get hooked, it's only the first one in a four part series…

Goddesses: Which ones can you name? Do you know what they're the goddesses of? My favorite one growing up was always Artemis, the Greek goddess of the moon and baby animals, and more recently I would have to say it is Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction in the service of creation (like how sometimes land has to be cleared so that crops can be planted, or how you can be very sad, but from that grow and become even happier than you were before).

What about human goddesses? Or heroines? Rosa Parks? Joan of Arc? Sometimes we study or hear about so many male gods and heroes that we need to balance them all out with some strong women to inspire us.

1. Stay real (authentic, genuine, not fake, no b.s.).

2. Don't give up (Giving up is when you say, "She'll never
get me, she'll never trust me, she'll always embarrass me.")

3. Build the relationship you want (where she actually
listens when you're talking and you actually want to listen back.)
